Length of Benefits

How long will my benefits continue?

If you have become entitled to Social Security Disability, you may basically continue to receive disability benefits provided that you cannot work and your disability has not medically improved. In cases such as disability benefits continuing until the standard retirement age, the Social Security disability benefits will automatically become retirement benefits. It is important to note that there will be no adjustments in benefit amount and the check you will be receiving will just indicate that it is retirement check and not the usual disability check.

However, disability benefits will not essentially carry on for an indefinite period. Most people with disabilities recover from severe injuries and illnesses due to modernizations and improvements in medical technology and rehabilitation strategies. These people also have prevailed over serious conditions and eventually were able to go back to work through their sheer determination and effort.

If the Social Security Administration comes to a decision that your disability has recovered sufficiently for you to return to work, they will end your disability benefits 3 months following the decision that you are not disabled anymore. Losing disability benefits should not worry you if your impairment persists to hinder you from going back to work. Your disability benefits will continue for as long as you need them.
